How to Measure Your Laptop Before You Buy a Bag

A 16-inch laptop can still be too wide for a 16-inch sleeve.

Laptop sizes refer to the diagonal screen. A bag has to accommodate the whole machine: bezel, hinge, rubber feet, and any protective case. That small distinction is responsible for a lot of bad fits.

If you are wondering how to measure laptop size for a bag, ignore the model name for a minute. Close the computer, leave on the case you use every day, and take three measurements: width, depth, and thickness.

Measure the laptop you actually carry

Set the closed laptop on a flat surface. Use a ruler or measuring tape and write down:

1. Width: Measure from the left edge to the right edge at the widest point.
2. Depth: Measure from the front edge to the back edge, including any hinge that extends beyond the body.
3. Thickness: Measure the thickest point of the closed device, including its feet and everyday case.

Keep the numbers in that order: width × depth × thickness. Do not round down, and use the same unit shown on the product page. Those three numbers are more useful than the name printed on the computer.

Why the screen label does not settle the fit

A 15.6-inch label describes the visible screen diagonal. Two laptops with the same screen size can still have different bezels, hinges, and body dimensions. A hard case adds another variable.

Look for interior laptop dimensions or a verified fit statement. Exterior bag dimensions tell you how much room the bag occupies, not how much space surrounds the computer inside it.

If the laptop is the whole assignment
